HALF & HALF is a residency project at Muntpunt where we explore how we can stimulate informal language learning through existing social and creative initiatives.
Whether you run a radio collective, a theatre group, a textile workshop, … We want your activity to become a place where people can come together and naturally improve their Dutch by doing what they love.
That's what HALF & HALF means: half doing, half Dutch.
Feel free to apply even if you don't speak Dutch or your activity currently isn't in Dutch. Muntpunt will support you and help you to open up your activity to Dutch speakers and learners – and maybe learn some Dutch along the way yourself.
Join us to explore how your existing practice can bring people together – creating spaces where people create, meet, and connect, and where Dutch follows naturally.
Apply before 16 June 2026.
The first residency cycle starts in October 2026.
Applying is free and the residency will take minimal time investment – you just do what you're already doing, with added support and in the buildings of Muntpunt.
This call is for anyone in Brussels who already creates spaces where people meet, create or participate together. Collectives, individuals, informal initiatives, artistic or social organisations, small or large: if your practice brings people together, this is for you. We’ll help you open up your activity to Dutch learners, making your practice accessible to new audiences.
In a multilingual city like Brussels, many worlds exist side by side. Language can easily become a barrier, even when the desire to connect or learn is already there. We all know people who want to learn Dutch. Their motivation is rarely the issue.
What’s missing is something much simpler: real, human, meaningful opportunities to be around the language. Places where you can speak Dutch, stumble through it, and not feel out of place — even if you only understand half of it.
HALF & HALF steps into that gap. It starts from a simple belief: that people connect and learn language best through use, exposure, emotion, context, interaction, awkwardness and laughter.
Brussels is already full of places where this could happen naturally. Our city is bursting with initiatives that bring people together: community gardens, drawing sessions, film screenings, public space experiments and more. HALF & HALF builds on this reality. It explores what happens when we start from shared practice instead of shared language. It breaks with the idea that language is a condition for participation. Here, participation comes first and Dutch follows through practice.
The HALF & HALF residency starts from what is already there: your practice and the way you bring people together. Together, we move that activity to Muntpunt and make it accessible to Dutch learners.
There is no need to turn your work into a language project or to change what you do. Residents continue their existing activities, test small adjustments that allow Dutch to appear naturally, and reflect briefly on what works and what doesn’t. Muntpunt provides Dutch-speaking volunteers who can help you lead the activity and the conversation (in case you don't speak Dutch), as well as a free space to organise the activity in.
